← Back to the field guide- Amino acid
- One of the small building blocks that join to make peptides and proteins.
- Peptide
- A chain of amino acids. Its exact order and chemical form help determine what it does.
- Fragment
- A shorter piece of a longer molecule. A piece may behave differently from the whole.
- Acetylation
- Adding a small chemical group to a molecule. Ac- at the start of a peptide name can mark this change.
- Actin
- A protein cells use to build an inner framework. It helps cells change shape and move.
- Migration
- Movement from one place to another. In cell research, it means cells moving.
- Angiogenesis
- The growth of new blood vessels. It has a role in repair, but its effect depends on the tissue and condition.
- Metabolite
- A substance made when the body or a test system changes or breaks down another substance.
- In vitro
- Studied outside a living body, such as in cells grown in a dish.
- Preclinical
- Research before a treatment is tested in people, often using cells or animals.
- Placebo or vehicle
- A comparison treatment without the ingredient being tested. A vehicle is the base formulation.
- Randomized trial
- A study that uses chance to assign people to groups. This helps make the comparison fair.
- Primary outcome
- The main result a study plans to measure. Check it before focusing on smaller side findings.
- Statistical significance
- A rule used to judge how compatible the results are with chance under a stated model. It does not measure how useful a treatment is.
- Phase I
- An early human study, often focused on safety and how the body handles a substance.
- Formulation
- The complete prepared product, including its ingredients and the way they are put together.
- Route
- How a product enters or reaches the body, such as an eye drop or a tablet.
- COA
- Certificate of analysis: a report about tests on a sample. Its value depends on the methods and a clear link to the batch.
- DIN
- Drug Identification Number: the eight-digit number used for an authorized Canadian drug product.
- Evidence gap
- An important question that the available research does not yet answer.
